Our Heritage Orchard
In 2022 we began our heritage orchard, mainly consisting of apple trees but to increase diversity we added in a some pear trees. We followed this up with two further plantations of these trees in 2023 and 2024 giving us the amazing orchard we have now. In 2025 we took our first pickings off of the 2022 trees and are now selling the apple juice produced from those fruits in our shop.
What are the benefits of a Heritage Orchard?
UK heritage orchards originated from early fruit cultivation introduced by the Romans. They developed through medieval monastic and rural farming systems and expanded between the 16th and 19th centuries. They began their decline in the 20th century due to agricultural change, and are now conserved for their cultural, historical, and ecological value. At Native Beef and Lamb we would like to carry on this cultural tradition and keep the history of these orchards alive, however, this is not the only benefit...
Fruit trees bring all manner of visitors to our farm and provide a wonderful habitat for both beetles and birds. In the summer months the bees love to pay a visit flavouring all the local honey with a sweet apple like under-tone and it isn't just above ground that benefits!
Below ground our heritage orchard is not only improving our soil health and structure with its roots, it is helping to store carbon reducing any green house gases produced around the farm.
To top it all off we then get to produce delicious apple juice from the apples we pick from the trees, we also sell some of this in our shop so, if you would like to try some of our apple juice head down to our shop to purchase some!
